Istanbul Airport

Istanbul Airport is the newest and largest airport in Turkey, serving as the country's primary international gateway. Located on the European side of Istanbul, the airport was officially opened in 2019 and has already become one of the busiest airports in Europe. It is also known as İstanbul Yeni Havalimanı airport. Istanbul IATA airport code is IST. “ISL” airport code refers to the now closed Istanbul Atatürk Airport. Istanbul Airport is one of two city’s international airports. Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport, located on the Asian side of Istanbul, is the second one.

History of Istanbul Airport

The airport history dates back to its inception in 2013. It was built as part of a visionary project to create a world-class aviation hub that would not only meet the growing demand for air travel but also elevate Istanbul's status as a global metropolis. The airport was designed to replace the older Atatürk Airport, also located on the European side of Istanbul. The new Turkish Airport  features six runways and four terminals and was opened on 6 April 2019.
